Namaste can be confusing to the newer yogi, understandably! It can even be confusing to the seasoned yogi.
The new yogis are often times hesitant or downright puzzled when I put my hands to heart center and bow to them in Namaste.
Maybe I will hear a whisper as the student wonders what it means and if they should repeat it back to me.
To clear things up, hopefully, I like to break down the word and the meaning.
Nama means bow, as means I, and te means you. Therefore, namaste literally means, “I bow to you.”
The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us. It is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another.
I use Namaste as a symbol of gratitude for my students as I am so grateful each and every day that I am able to share my practice and love for yoga and life with them.
The light in me honors and acknowledges the light in you.
